Mouth breathing: The Hidden Epidemic
Introduction
At the age of 6 and with my first orthodontic treatment, I started to understand that teeth and the mouth were big deals. My orthodontist had a pretty holistic approach, working hand in hand with my osteopaths speech therapists, and whatnot to get me from a narrow jaw to a perfectly aligned set of teeth and no major pronunciation issues (except my French accent ahah!!).
Fast forward several decades, I came across three consecutive books. (Thanks to wandering around bookstores)
- “If Your Mouth Could Talk” — Author: Dr. Kami Hoss
- “Jaws: The Story of a Hidden Epidemic” — Author: Sandra Kahn, D.D.S., and Paul R. Ehrlich, Ph.D.
- “Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art” — Author: James Nestor
The book ‘Breath’ begins with the author conducting a 10-day experiment where he breathes exclusively through his mouth since no one volunteered for this painful experiment — judging it too painful or risky — although we can estimate that 30 to 50% of people live this self-torture every day not even knowing it.
