What is the infinite game?

The Infinite Game is one of the books that changed my life and approach to everything.

In a few key points

Finite games

  • Finite games have rules, a winner, a loser, and a definite time frame. Soccer is a good example
  • In finite games, every participant’s objective is to outdo the competition and emerge victorious

Example (from the book):
Sinek explained how Microsoft released the Zune in response to the Apple iPod, which was technically superior to the iPod. However, in the bigger picture, it failed to become a product that helped users and the industry improve. Instead, Microsoft leaders spent all their energy trying to “beat Apple”

Infinite games

  • Infinite games are played by a group of worthy rivals
  • The main goal is to advance a just cause.
  • In the infinite game, people have a purpose
  • Worthy rivals are needed to advance the just cause: competition is healthy
  • Worthy competitors are driven not by the desire to win but to sustain the game,
  • Players do what is best for the company, the users…
